OLDER WORKERS

Your future is ahead of you!  Just as much as it ever was.

Many older workers feel comfortable coasting along during those last years, turning their energies to themselves and their non-work life.

Others don’t want to be left on a plateau to finish the rest of their career. They are still challenged and are even more energetic than in their younger days. But many older workers have concerns about their potential as the years go by.  Here is an example:

Richard is a 55 year old engineer.  Can his problem be solved, or is it too late?

I know my job so well that the challenge is pretty much gone.  I guess I’ve outgrown my job. My evaluations are fine, but I don’t have the feeling of contribution I used to have. But that’s not the only thing that bothers me. I’m older now than most of  the other people in my group, and twenty years older than my boss.  I am beginning to feel out of place in the department, and I’m not ready yet to be put out to pasture!  What can I do to jump-start my career?

Our Comments:

Our Comments Richard’s potential for promotions and other windows of opportunity is slim. He has been in the same job for so long  that progress up the ladder or even laterally is unlikely if he continues as he is.  The company’s culture is changing, and he feels out of step with the younger employees.  He shouldn’t wait too long to try to change his chances for a more fulfilling work life. The sameness of his job will tap his energy to the point where he will find himself in that pasture he wants to avoid.

A Suggestion for You:

If you have concerns about your career, try this. Think about your job during the past few months and answer the following questions. Write down your answers. Be specific, use examples.

What do I like about my Job? What don't I like?

Am I willing to put energy into changing things?
