Charles, a retired
purchasing manager, is in his late sixties. His problem has a happy ending.
"I think what I missed was being part of something that had a purpose
beyond my life. Even if I was doing
things I wanted to do, the days were too much the same---same people,
same
places, same conversations. I wasn’t so much dissatisfied as I was
bored. I missed a structure to the days. I needed to break out of the
retired
rut……….That was a year ago, and the last twelve months have been some
of
the best of my life. I wish I’d done it sooner."
Our Comments:
This
was a real success story, and
such experiences are becoming more common. Thanks to the baby boomers
we are changing the way we think about the last years of life. The huge
generation of
boomers will soon enter their 60s, and their preoccupation with youth
rejects
the idea of having a career that is
in the past. They say they want to
experience the changes in modern organizations, and want an alternative
to the
retirement lifestyle of their
parents.
A Suggestion for
You:
If Charles’
concerns seem to fit you and you are energetic and flexible, think about the
following questions. Write down
your answers. Be specific, use examples.
What are my strengths? My weaknesses?
What do I really want to do with the rest of my life?
