SELF-DEFEATING BEHAVIORS
Most of us have some behaviors
that are self-defeating. They are habits we have in reacting to
people or situations. Some of these behaviors are in our
genes, and some are learned. But
the major point is that they can keep us from getting what we want. Here are a
few examples:
Talk too much? Too fast? This can make what you say seem unimportant.
Rushed and disorganized? Others
can lose confidence in your ability to perform.
Overly critical of other people? Of
yourself? Both will decrease your
influence.
Too independent? Team skills
are required in today’s organizations.
Does criticism make you defensive? You may be missing some important
signals.

SELF-SABOTAGE EXERCISE
Think carefully about the things you do or fail to do that
stand between you and the way you want your career to be. Then, answer these
questions. Try to be specific and use examples.
(1) What
do I do that is a real or
potential threat to my career?
(2) How
can I correct this behavior?
The first step toward a new career is to know yourself. Why not correct
these behaviors before you take them with you to a new job? |
